Can Bailiffs Force Entry for Council Tax Debt?

If a Bailiff knocks on your door, then it is important to know your rights. To begin with, get proof of their identity, check their ID.

Do not just let them in! The next step is to check if the bailiff can force entry. This depends on what debt they are collecting.

You bailiff could force entry if they are chasing magistrate court fines or tax debts. Forcing entry does not mean they can break down your door or hurt you. They would need to return with a locksmith, who will open your door.

You bailiff will not be allowed to force entry if you owe: council tax arrears; credit card or catalogue debt; unpaid parking tickets; utility bills debt.

If you agree to let them in, then once they are there they will check your home for saleable items.
