If you find yourself struggling to pay your mortgage repayments and you fall behind, then you have fallen into mortgage arrears. How long will you be allowed to stay in arrears?

If you fall into arrears with your mortgage lender, it is best not to wait until they call you. Get in touch with them as soon as possible. However, they will normally give you approximately 15 days grace.

Once this period is over, it is expected that you will come to an arrangement with your lender to make the missed payment and to continue making future payments.

If you are unable to do this, then you would need to attemp to come to a new arrangement with your lender, or to sell your property. If you cannot come to an arrangement, then your lender may apply to the courts for a repossession order.
